It's the end of the year. The kids are suffering from spring fever and summer anxiousness. I am running low on supplies, trying to pack my room, and also keep my classes sane. They are tired of drawing, we just reviewed pastels, they finished their ceramic pieces, and now I need something fun and different to introduce to them.
Food art.
We started with a study on Wayne Thiebaud and his art. Once again the kids were shocked that someone could make a living drawing something they deem to be so simple. But over all they liked his art and they liked him. Sometimes artists can be a bit to radical for my small town middle schoolers and Wayne Thiebaud presented a person they could relate to.
So we started with drawing and painting out Wayne Thiebaud inspired cupcakes. It was a quick and fun project. The kids enjoyed coming up with their own creations.
Then, after a laborious memorial day weekend, I baked over 500 mini cupcakes in strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla and let the kids go at it with decorated and consuming. It was a fun day and little did they know they were learning about one of the great American artists at the same time.
