Starry Night

I showed the kids the original Starry Night in class and did an entire presentation on Impressionism and Van Gogh. To my surprise, the kids were not impressed. Many of them said Van Gogh was terrible and no better than a 1st grader. I was shocked! Van Gogh Starry Night is a classic and I love it. So I showed them all the different interpretations of Starry Night and just how possible it is.

We started with this video of a Domino presentation. The kids thought it was pretty cool and it got them more interested in the painting.

We then looked at all the different interpretations of the painting. From Pacman to Batman to more classic remakes of the painting. The kids had their favorites and their least favorites of course but it got them inspired to do this own.

I started with a lesson on the Starry Night Technique. I gave the kids a coloring sheet of the original starry night and we practiced both using paint and pastel. Once the kids had the hang of it, I gave them the choice of what they wanted to do with their own interpretation.

Some kids really embraced it. Some did interpretations of the interpretations they found online. Some just didn't get it but here is what we came up with:
