Color Review

My students have a really hard time understanding color. We went over it last semester as part of our Elements of Art unit but as we progressed, we were still struggling with the same things over and over again.

So I found this to be a great reteach moment. We reviewed color wheels, secondary colors, intermediate colors, analogous and complementary color schemes and then I did a fun project with color mixing. All you need is a cookie or graham cracker, white frosting and some food coloring. You give them Red, Blue, and Yellow frosting and ask them to create a 12-point color wheel. Here is what we came up with:

Just a simple six point wheel

And then the final product!

With the worksheet review and the editable color wheel in their bellies, I gave them the sketchbook assignment: Create a color wheel interpretation. Find a creative way to show all twelve colors in the correct way. I was beginning to see some understanding!
