Neon Animals

With Standardized Tests and Spring Fever, keeping the kids engaged in the art room is a challenge. I stumbled upon a project done in an elementary classroom and thought my middle school kids would love to try it.

So I ordered a set of Neon Paints, due to our budget we settled for an affordable Sargent Art Tempera paint. I discovered rather quickly the paints would take several coats to make an finished polish look, but otherwise they were quite fun to work with. They come on like watercolors but with several coats they look polished.

My stipulation for the project was to select a Jungle Animal. With some negotiations, the kids convinced me to allow other forrest animals into the mix as well. The kids sketched and applied their first coat of Fluorescent paints.

We then looked at Jackson Pollock, his art work and his process. The students had difficulty understanding how or why this man was a revered artist which launched a discussion on art being "on the eye of the beholder."

And then we got to the fun part! Splatter paint!
