In my school district, we are required to have two assessments at minimum. I decided to give one written test but I also wanted to give a project that would demonstrate an understanding of the elements thus far. After reading on other blogs and looking at projects, I decided the human hand would be a good starting place for the assessment. The project was to demonstrate an understanding of Shape, Form, Line, and Color.
To begin, their journal assignment was to fill an entire pace with line designs. It was called "Lines on Lines" and I got the idea from the Lost Sock Art Blog. This would give them an idea of what designs they wanted to use for their final project.
Students started by tracing their hand and then folding their paper so they had eight squares. The parameters of the project were as follows:
1. In each square, create a line design using lines and shapes. You must have 8 different line designs. Your hand design can be the same as the boxes or different but you must have 8.
2. You must demonstrate a warm/cold color pattern. The inside of your hand must be the opposite of the outside. So if inside your hand is warm colors, outside of your hand must be cool colors.
3. Leave no white space and fill the space with design. Do not simply color the background, create a design pattern with your lines and shapes.
I discovered very quickly that students not only did not understand what was warm and what was cold, but that despite their journal assignment, many students struggled with create a line design. The project took over a week to complete because many students started over after realizing their colors did not match and many students simply did not listen to directions.
However, the project had some great results. Here are a few of those that shined:
