Candy Watercolor

Halloween Candy Watercolors

For Halloween I thought it would be fun to introduce Still Life via candy. I mean, many students had expressed a lack of interest in still life and had told me how hard it was for them so I thought it would be fun and would help them get excited if we did it via candy.

The project was simple. We started with an introduction to Proportion and still life. I gave students some random grocery items (apple, soda, banana, and granola bar) to do a pencil sketch still life in their journals. I asked them to think about the size relationship (or proportion) of each item. (The apple shouldn't be smaller than the banana but bigger than the soda etc.)

After they did journal sketches and demonstrated an understanding of not only proportion but still life, I introduced the candy assignment. They started with a sketch on watercolor paper. I told them to look at ALL the details. Writing should all be butter letters, background, colors, and all the small details.

Then I have them a set of 8-color Prang watercolors and a couple brush size options. It took way longer than I anticipated for most of the kids. Yes of course there was the kids who tried to finish the first day by coloring the whole thing red, but some of the better ones needed more time! Some spent so much time on the little details, they actually never finished. I begged them to come after school but alas, they did not. Here however are some of the better products:
