So while browsing Pinterest and my favorite Art Blogs, I cam across a lesson plan for Element Monsters. I liked the idea and wanted to adapt it to Middle School.
We had already wrapped up all the Elements and had done daily exercises demonstrating an understanding of all of them. We did a basic lesson on pastel blending and the difference between Pastel and Crayon. At this point, unfortunately, my art supplies had not come in so we had to use a less than desirable brand of pastel that I bought in bulk from Hobby Lobby.
I started with a Pastel practice sheet I found on Pinterest. I wish I would have bookmarked the page because I lost the original source. Basically I walked the kids through how to create a blended flame and then they worked on blending a leaf and wave on their own.
The assignment was the following:
1) Use lines and shapes to create a monster rough draft. The monster must be original! Do not use a monster you've already seen in a movie or television show.
2) Create a monster space. Where does your monster live? How big or small is it in in compared to it's environment?
Students had to show me their rough draft sketch before I would give them their pastel paper. Once they were ready...
3) Create the monster color , value, and texture using pastels. Is your monster rough? Smooth? Spiky? Bumpy?
This was actually the most difficult part for the students. Even though we talked about texture when we introduced clay the week before, they had difficulty understanding how to put it in a 2D picture. It was a good chance to see where the reteach needed to happen.
Final products were quite fun! it was a great start to the Halloween Season:
